What does it mean to be a guarantor?

Samtrygg perform a credit check of the tenant. If the tenant isn't creditworthy, a family member, friend, or colleague can step in as a guarantor for the tenant. This means that both the tenant and guarantor will sign the lease, but the guarantor will sign the lease as a guarantor and not as a tenant. 

In the event that a debt is not paid by the tenant, Samtrygg can demand the guarantor of the debt immediately after it has become due for payment. Legally, this is called a "proprieborgen" and is referred to as "Borgensman - såsom för egen skuld". Put simply, this means that the guarantor is just as liable to pay the debt as if they had entered into the lease themselves.
